How to Build Shoulders Rear Deltoid

During summer time or on different occasions when I see guys who typically have worked out there is one thing in all of them - they lack that rear part of their shoulders. This is getting especially easy to see when they have bigger shoulders.

As everyone is asking how to build shoulders they tend to miss the rear part. Without it the shoulder don't look complete. It is one of those little parts that is not big and not very easy to grow so people skip it.

My advise is to keep 1-2 sets for it when training shoulders so you won't have that missing feature which most guys do when they build shoulders. Keep the overall shape.

Here are my favorite exercises for rear deltoid:

* Basic rule: start with little weight first. This is very little muscle you can overload it pretty easy.

1. Bent Lateral Raise. Use this line on incline bench. Lie on face on the bench and put our arms in front of you almost locked (never lock your arms and legs for safety reasons). Then raise them on both sides without bending the elbows. You should feel the tension in your rear shoulders.

2. Sword pulling. Ok, the name is lame but it is exactly what it looks like. This actually is quite good exercise to build shoulders. Take one light dumbbell. Lie sideways on a bench. With your upper hand put the dumbbell down in front of you. It should be positioned near your opposite part of the waist.

Now raise the dumbbell so it makes semi circle movement until you extend your arm to the max almost behind your back. Do it slowly to avoid over-extension! The movement is very similar to pulling a sword.

3. Bent Cable Pull. For this you need lower cable machine. Position yourself sideways to the machine and take the cable with your outer arm. Now bent (and even kneel a little for better stability). The arm holding the cable (your outer arm) should be relaxed. The cable should keep it straight in front of your chest. This is your starting position.

Now pull the cable with very little bending of the elbow until your arm is almost extended to maximum. Then return slowly. This is one rep.

Keep in mind those exercises are difficult at the start. Try first getting the movement clear so you can build shoulders without risking injury. Always warm your shoulders well before training them.

Adding those exercise to your workout will ensure that your rear deltoid will not fall behind. Otherwise you might find yourself having one of those non-complete shoulders. Don't be that guy!

Recently I purchased a different version of this HP DV6 laptop for my mother-in-law and I looked at this model during that process (all HP DV6 laptop models share a common chassis and only vary on a few components). The first thing about the DV6 line that impressed me was the build quality. It is well constructed with a metallic toned black plastic exterior. Take a good look at the shell art since it is something that may not appeal to everyone but my mother-in-law definitely appreciated having something a little more individual than the usual dull grey exterior. Despite the glossy exterior we haven't noticed much in the way of finger prints or any scratches despite the helping hands of our kids who love to "help" grandma with her computer.

The specs for this model are aimed at someone focused on web browsing and office type applications who wants superb battery life:

CPU - The Core 2 duo is the best performing notebook CPU on the market and the T6500 included with this computer is a mid-range Core2 Duo (2.1 GHZ w/2MB cache). It can handle two threads which means you can have the virus scanner running while you surf the web with no noticeable slowdown. It's not the highest performing CPU out there today but it's far above what you need for non-gaming tasks and it has a enough performance head-room to keep your computer from becoming outdated anytime soon.

RAM - The 4GB of RAM is combined with a 64bit OS to which should provided more than enough memory for pretty much any application you can think of outside of extremely high end gaming.

HDD - 320GB plenty is far more space than you need now but again, I like the future proofing. Some people may not like that it is 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM but the performance difference for home users is nearly zero and the reliability of 5400 RPM drives makes me prefer them in notebooks which are hard on hard disks (because they move around while in use notebook HDDs suffer far more failures than desktop drives)

Graphics - While I am a fan of Intel CPUs their graphics performance has lagged the competition. The good news is that the integrated Intel 4500MHD graphics controller in this model is a step up from previous Intel offerings and all most home users will need. I still wouldn't recommend you try and run graphics hungry 3-D games on it but it's fine for playing videos, surfing the web, doing light gaming, and running office applications.

Display - I like this 15.6" display though I got my mother-in-law the 16" version of the DV6. While a little smaller than what I settled on it is far superior to the 14-15" screens you usually see in this price range.

Sound - Surprisingly good sound for a notebook. The speakers are well positioned and deliver a good range. I've heard better but it was on a $3K notebook.

Battery - For years the retail notebook market has been plagued with cheap six cell and even four cell batteries that could barely deliver 90 minutes of real computing use. To see HP bundle a 12 cell Li-Ion battery in with this notebook is hopefully a sign the industry is recognizing that notebook users want good battery life. With a 12 cell battery you can realistically plan to go all day without plugging in. This does add slightly to the weight but few users will notice. You will be hard pressed to find another laptop in this price range with a batter this good. Most will have a 6 cell.

I don't have any serious "cons" for this computer. The "Touch Media Controls" for things like the volume (as opposed to buttons you push) are a little odd at first but we got used to them quickly and hey, they look cool when they light up.

To wrap it all up: a good computer for home users who don't plan on running high-end games and who looking for something with above average build quality and really good battery life.

CPU - The T6500 is great for General usage. It's okay for gaming and HD playback too.

RAM - 4GB makes multitasking a breeze

Hard Drive - The main partition is 285GB with a 12.5GB recovery partition. 285GBs is a nice size to work with too it'll take long, long time to fill that up.

Graphics - The 4500MHD is okay for light gaming like Counter-Strike. It also does HD playback fine.

Sound - This laptop has great speakers. They don't get too loud but that's fine. The quality of the sound is great.

Battery - Will last a good long while and is better than most laptops. Most laptops have 6 cell batteries, this one has a 12 cell. Also the battery sticks out from the bottom. Some people may not like it but it is also a good thing because heat won't get stuck under the laptop.

Heat - This laptop will get warm from extended use. It gets slightly uncomfortable to type on because of it. It's not really that bad though.

Keyboard - This laptop is easy to type on. I can type really fast on it. It is a full keyboard with a numpad so most of your keys are there.
The Home, End, Pgup, PGdown, keys are above the trackpad and delete is above the backspace.

Trackpad - The trackpad may seem a little hard to move on at first but after a while it becomes smooth. You can also turn it on and off with a button conveniently placed above it if you want to use a mouse. It also has a scroll bar.

Other Thoughts - This laptop has 2 head phone hacks. Both are in the front. I'd prefer one in the front then one in the side or back for speakers.

HP Logo on the cover lights up when the laptop is on. This annoys me when I leave my laptop on overnight and I have to put something over the light to cover it because it's kinda bright.

The remote it comes with is kind of small and it can be difficult to push the buttons but it still is a nice addition so I don't have to get up and pause, skip, etc. on the keyboard.

NOTE: This laptop only has the touch volume controls and a touch wifi button. There is no Play, Pause, Stop, etc. touch buttons on this model. That was kind of a disappointment because I have to press Fn+F12 if I want to change songs.

I am editing my original review because it offended some HP sympathizers and I want to be as clear as I possibly can. My review here is based on my experience with my HP Product an Elite model PC. 6 months out of the year I have had it, I began to seek out a solution from other HP consumers, I have read hundreds of negative reviews on PC's and laptops, trying to learn about the issues Nvidia was having with laptops and to see if they were also occurring in PCs with the same Nvidia card. My original goal was hopefully to find a solution to my product from a fellow customer. I have learned that 80% of all negative reviews I have read (close to 400) had all shown very similiar issues, proving to me a pattern not just with my product but the HP brand and yes HP laptops. This review is a very import review to read, I have warnings as well as important tips to avoid HP India customer support and get transferred directly to the Case Managment department, the highest any consumer can go within the company. They have the power to help you as HP India customer support has to wait and run all issues through them, thus why HP India is the worst customer service department ever and it takes weeks if not months to get answers from them. Everything I say here I have gone through personally. Read it and hopefully you will save your time and money and purchase another brand of laptop or PC. Research yourself, be smart and take your time, make an educated decision before spending your hard earned money. Note, always read the negative reviews and look for patterns, don't just go buy what Amazon reviews say, there are thousand other reviews out there. If you don't you will end up wasting money like me. Read my original reveiw below.

If I told you not to breath water would you do it? Well believe me when I say do not buy from HP because it is the same as breathing water, except breathing water isn't as painful. I have been trough hell since I bought mine, read below, as read other reviews. Just a hint, you will get more accurate information out of a negative review than a positive so just don't read the positives.

I purchased my HP computer back in July of 2008. I have since to get a working computer. I have sent the computer in for repair over 5 times and have received 4 replacement computers but I still have the same issues. I can't load any additional software onto the computer/s, I can't do much with it but check e-mail when it is working, anything I do makes the problems worse. The computer constantly has Blue Screen Errors, freezes up, the screen will break up into lines and freeze, the monitor will lose input from the computer, the list goes on. I demanded a refund after my 3rd replacement, the policy is 30 days after the purchase for a full refund. It was past the thirty days before I realized the computer was garbage, I was told it would be a quick fix so I tried to repair. I was offered a prorated refund while being told I would need to replace my 3rd with a 4th, I paid $2900 and I was offered $1300, but I was told I could keep my $99 monitor and my $150 printer, great deal, I said no thanks, I will ride out the storm.

If you are smart buy another brand, I dealt directly with Microsoft seeing if Vista was the problem, which it wasn't, I was sent a new Vista disc and did an Vista restore with a service patch but the problems stayed the same, the women mentioned that HP was known to have issues within their components. Microsoft was very good to me, everything was free and they gave me a voucher for a free Windows 7 once it is released. I would check out Lenovo, that's where I wanted to go but their pricey, I have heard similiar issues with Dell as my own but not as bad as what I have experienced with HP. I even considered Apple, which has some minor issues as all but not even close to HP.

If you decide to ignore my warning and buy an HP when things goes wrong as they most likely will DO NOT try to deal with HP India (HP's customer support), that is pure torture, google "HP e-mail the president" (Mark Hurd), that e-mail goes directly to the HP Executive Customer Support Department, you could try to contact them at 1-800-756-0608 X07 but they might require an e-mail in order to genorate a case number. They are useless in which you will learn but they will set up a case number for you and transfer you to the HP Case Managment Department, this is as high as you can go so be nice and patient because you cannot file any complaints against these people. They have the power to get things done unlike customer support who has to wait for their approval, beware if they decide to replace your computer make sure you go through the specs first as they will try to send you a lessor model to save money, I caught them doing this 3 out of 4 times. If you catch it they will quickly change it but if you don't your stuck with it. Don't give up if you make it this far, they can't close your case into the computer is fixed.

Be SMART and avoid all of this by NOT!!!! purchasing a HP product. I can't make your mind up for you, but if you follow my advice and read up on it you will see for yourself the pattern of issues that plaquge other consumers. Good way to find valuable reviews it to take what ever company or product you are checking out and write the name followed by sucks in your google search box, you will be amazed at how many links you get. Always look for the pattern, similiar issues, people might write very angry reviews and rant and rave but stay focused on the main issues the computer or what ever your looking for is having. Check out as many reviews as you can, I recommend at lease 50, connect the dots and tally up the issues you find, that is the best way to find out how good a product is, and the products weakness and flaws, the odds prove it, they don't lie.

As compared to other laptops at roughly the same price point, this computer is a much, much better deal. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

I bought this the 1st day it went on sale at Amazon - was literally about to pull the trigger on another laptop, but this popped up new on a final scan, so I bought it instead.

Main features that make it a great buy for the price are:

- A better, faster processor that is also Intel's latest offering (Quad Core Q9000)
- Lots of memory (4G)
- A bigger hard drive (500G)
- A larger screen (18.4")
- A Blu-Ray drive (for HD movies)

I wanted a very high performance laptop for under $2,000 - and was especially keen to find something with killer processor speed, a graphics card to drive 2 external HD monitors, and a big laptop screen.

I use the machine for general business purposes, but also most importantly for web development work running Drupal and an Apache development server on the machine, along with big programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop - all running pretty much at once. I do not use for gaming, but believe it would be great for that, too. I also don't use so much for video / movies, even though it is heavily designed with that in mind.

I extensively researched machines from Dell, Alienware, Sony, Asus, and other leading vendors (I didn't want a Mac, so didn't compare against that). I'm not a hard core techie, but I wanted the best I could buy, so I also looked at the Intel site and their processor specs, visited the geek blogs to get the latest gossip on processor performance, etc.

So far I couldn't be happier with the machine! It is great. Very, very fast. Laptop screen is large and super high quality. The keyboard is really lovely - very smooth, like silk.

A few notes on things I've learned about the machine so far:

- It is a big laptop. That's probably obvious from the 18.4" screen, but it is also pretty heavy and the power cord/transformer is bigger and heavier than normal (takes a lot of power to fuel the processor and screen). So while the computer is certainly portable, it sure doesn't fit in your back pocket. If you are a highly mobile worker, this might be a factor.

- Baseline graphics card will support dual external monitors and/or an HD TV connection. I am currently running 1 external 1680x1050 plus laptop screen, but will be adding 2nd external soon (the cabling for doing this is a bit confusing, but I think I now have it figured out).

- The entire HDX line of laptops is new (introduced Fall '08 from what I understand) and there is not yet a complete line-up of accessories available. For instance, I was thinking to get a docking station to configure my monitors, but only docking station that currently works with the machine is the HP QuickDock or xB4 and these do not have digital video/monitor ports (VGA only) which renders them pretty useless if you have high performance monitors. As well, they do not yet sell 'official' HP memory upgrades for this machine yet (tech support indicates they probably will later this year, so worth checking if that's important to you). In the meantime, you can use off-the-shelf memory from Amazon or wherever. Memory is DDR2 800Mhz 200 pin (which isn't stated anywhere obvious that I saw), but can be switched over to DDR3 if you upgrage to the enhanced graphics card.

- After many painful hours on hold and being routed from one tech support rep to another, I learned that there is a dedicated tech support group for the HDX laptops. For some reason, they provide only the main number in the collateral that comes with the machine - and no one at that number seems to know about this special group. But eventually somebody figured to route me there and I recommend you go there directly. 866-408-5408.

- The clear and sharp 16:9 display combined with the Dolby surround sound audio w/ the integrated sub-woofer and the little hp remote makes this laptop an ultimate media center platform.
- The 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor, 4 GB ram and 512 mb Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT dedicated graphics make this laptop perfect for the gamer and the programmer.
- The 16" screen appears a little odd at first but works out to be perfect for viewing 2-page documents or 2 application windows side-by-side. Coupled with the number pad on the keypad, the laptop is quite suited to office productivity.
- The hard-drive shock protection provides significant peace of mind considering its upto 500GB of your life's work. The finger-print scanner has also exceed my expectations in terms of utility with very easy & convenient linking with any webpage account log-in information.
- Appears to have every port known to man (most of which I never use) but the useful ones are placed in practical places to avoid a jungle of overlapping cables.
- The HP Total Care and HP Media Smart software packages seem to a significant improvement from their predecessors.
- Its gorgeous (non essential, but always a plus!)

- The screen is a little too glossy, which makes outdoor use hard and long term use a little tasking on the eyes.
- The fancy underlit volume and bass/treble touch controls on the laptop look good but dont function very seamlessly.

- Comes with a thin protective sleeve which is extremely slippery making it more of a hazard than offering any kind of actual protection
- As a "premium" laptop, it should have come with a spill-proof keyboard
- Not HP's fault, but it comes with Windows Vista Home Premium which has its pros and cons. I'd still prefer Windows XP and am waiting for MS Windows 7.

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago to use for my small business in various areas of my home and for travel. The laptop saves energy compared to using my desktop (also Energy Star compliant). It's also a great desktop replacement because of the expandability, powerful processor, screen size and keyboard layout. I looked at comparable units from Toshiba, Dell and ASUS, but they cost a lot more and/or didn't include the faster processor. I think you get a lot of bang for your buck with this one.

For those who want to be able to view TV on the laptop, HP sells a USB TV tuner for around $98, so no need to worry about the lack of a built-in TV tuner. The media drive includes Blu-ray, which is nice.

PROS: The extended keyboard with separate numeric keys is a nice feature. You can even turn off power to the touchpad if you use a USB mouse. I also like the fingerprint reader. You don't have to use it, but it saves time typing in passwords when logging in to Windows or sites online. The HDMI port is great for connecting to larger monitors or TVs. HDMI outputs sound as well, which is awesome!

CONS: I'd prefer XP over Vista. Some of my specialized 32-bit programs don't run as well on the 64-bit OS, but most are fine. I wish the screen weren't glossy because it's hard to use outdoors with the reflection.

UPDATE: I've had the laptop for a few months now and still love it. The keyboard is great for touch-typists. The only glitches I've noticed have been related to the sound device and fingerprint reader. I think the problems were OS-related, because they seem to be resolved now. For a short time the fingerprint reader wasn't being recognized even though it worked initially. Then the OS had problems detecting when to use the HDMI sound output, even though that also worked correctly initially. I had to help it detect which device I wanted it to use for sound output, and now it's working fine again.

I'd definitely buy this laptop again and have already recommended it to friends. A great backpack for it is the Alienware Orion backpack. It fits perfectly and isn't bulky at all, although it's a bit more expensive than some other options.

But let's get to the complaints.
I use Filemaker all day. The arrow down key is already starting to wear to a solid black. I would say that at my rate the silver should be gone by the end of the year and I will have a black key where the arrow down should be. All other keys look fine so far. My Thinkpad is 5 years old with 5 years of Filemaker use and still doesn't have any signs of wear on that key or any others.

I don't know how to describe the feel of the keyboard other than saying it feels worn out, cheap, imprecise. Very noisy compared to my old Thinkpad. Clicky. If the keyboard is your most important criteria, I highly recommend you go try one of these out at Best Buy or WalMart before purchasing. That way it won't be a big shock when you get it.

Right above the power button there is a vibration at the speaker that sounds like the speaker is distorting. It is not. All you have to do is press slightly on the mesh and it will go away. I would attempt to fix this, but I have external speakers, so I won't be bothered often.

Right where my hand rests on the front, I get a squeek from the seams in the plastic. Not a big deal for me. It could be bothersome to some. You go to put your hand down and "squeek". You lift it back up and "squeek".

I wish there were some sort of rubber plugs to fill all the open "peripheral" holes to keep them clean over the next few years.

This is a 64 bit edition of Vista. AutoCad 2004 doesn't work on it and AutoCad could care less. AutoCad says I need to upgrade. This is not HPs fault or Microsoft. I just thought somebody might want to know before it's too late.

Some of my Adobe programs have issues with Vista 64 which Adobe has no plans of addressing.

What's funny is that I have a picture viewing program that I purchased in 1996 that runs just fine.

This is vented from the bottom. If you would like to put this on your lap or on the bed when traveling etc., you will need some sort of "table". I have a 1/16" aluminum panel, slightly larger than the computer, always underneath unless I'm on a solid surface. The panel also helps stiffen the case when transporting.

You also must use the cloth protector that goes between the keyboard and the screen. Keyboard parts will rub on the screen and cause marks.....like I now have. I don't know if the cloth would actually help or just make things worse.

What is really sad is that here is a new product from HP and nobody has bothered to contact me about these issues. If it were my product line, I'm sure I would read the reviews on the largest online retailer in the world and attempt contacting some. I guess it's just a sign of the times. As a software developer looking for a machine that can handle the requirements of building software, and being a multi media machine, this is a great choice. The Quad Core and 4 GB or Ram handles everything with elegance. One thing I would criticize would be the HP software bundle. HP is slow in resolving their software issue which can be annoying. After removing some of them, and disabling them, I am much happier.
Also, I run movies through an older projector that can handle 1080i, but not HDMI or encrypted digital signals. The VGA port being able to output nice 1080 equivalent saved me from needing to buy a new projector to run Blu-ray at a decent resolution. I would liked to have a optical audio port for my also legacy Bose sytem, alas the only surround sound options are HDMI, which I can't plug in. But I found a USB sound device that dealt nicely with sending my Bose surround sound.
Play back of blu-ray on the laptop screen is beautiful, and the built in speakers with a subwoofer beneath really sound great. Maybe not enough to trully fill a room, but for watching a movie on your lap, very nice. Only issue with the screen is the high mirror like reflection making this laptop unusable outdoors or in bright light. It would not work well sitting outside a coffee shop enjoying a beautiful day.

I love this laptop. The num pad is a welcome addition! I play WOW on it frequently and it has enough power and RAM to handle that with no issues so if you want to use it for gaming, game on! I am not a big Vista fan but this is the best perfomance I have gotten from a computer running Vista thus far. I figured I would be wiping it out and replacing it with XP but it's working so well I've decided to leave it with the Vista 64-bit that comes preloaded. The laptop runs hot after it's been on an extended amount of time so I do recommend purchasing a chill pad with USB fan to keep it from overheating. Mine overheated so bad after being on for several hours of gaming (12+ hours) that the system crashed stating it couldn't find the hard drive, turned it off for a little while and it worked like a champ again. It is ironic I picked HP for reliability and service reasons. After over two frustrating months I can only report about poor reliability and extremely ineffective service. My new HDX Laptop still has major performance issues and the horizon looks bleak. I am considering making this purchase a total lose in order to save me from wasting many more hours of my time.

Out of the box the laptop looked promising. for instance HP decision to scarify proper aspect ratio for the display in order to achieve high resolution at a lower cost seems reasonable (it uses standard HDTV screen rather than WXGA). Immediately it was obvious that performance was mediocre at best in spite of ordering the highest available options for my configuration (processor, memory, hard drive, etc. all superior to the listing above). Documentation was not helpful like directing me to unavailable features and options for the embedded webcam.

I failed my first task of connecting my new HP laptop to my new HP printer. It is missing an essential HP driver that apparently was supposed to be install at the factory. After eight weeks and 50 (yes fifty!) hours of my time and similar effort from HP, the only option I have, is to start from scratch and install the initial factory configuration for the software myself. Since it takes numerous hours to proceed the inital configuration with missing updates, software configuration choices, installation of my own software, etc., I wonder if I should invest any more time in this computer. At this moment, the reason for the faulty factory installation is not on HP service map yet (likely a faulty sector on my new hard drive). Thus my odds to continue a long expensive path in reviving my sick new computer looks high.

Since we are at the age of paying relatively little for much functionality and performance one must face the high probability of requiring support. If you like to follow excessive useless long laundry instruction lists (looked canned to me) of re-installing existing software that works fine, email HP Support and ask for help. If you enjoy long aimless frustrating discussions with mostly nice people but with lack of knowledge, ability, responsibility, or authority (probably the combination of all), than buy HP products. I can assure you that you will meet many people from the Philippines and India with various impressive job titles.

While generating a rich set of service records, I was wandering how can HP afford to spend so much time and effort with a single customer on a single product with very low profit margin. Perhaps that is the reason why HP cut corners more aggressively than others. My personal cursory inquiry and Consumer Reports survey suggest that Lenovo is a better choice for laptops.

1. I don't like these touch buttons on the keyboard at all. Slow response or response by wrong way all the time. I have to be very careful how many times touch on that volume touch button. It has to wait for CPU available to take sound adjustment request processor. A normal mechanical button is more efficient.
2. Wireless connection comes and goes. I guess that is windows vista's common issue.
3. DVD player interface is so bad; actually, HP media DVD player is the worst DVD player software I have even seen, which shows HP is really not a software company! Player does NOT allow use mouse to do most of DVD normal function and remote control doesn't work at all in most of time. Backward, forward can only go one speed. And every time I want to change movie feature (add subtitle), DVD will restart from beginning.
4. HDMI output doesn't include sound, only video.
5. You can put second hard disk in this laptop. But it's not wired.
6. Not indication bar on screen shows screen brightness level during adjustment
Overall conclusion

After twenty years of using nothing but desktops, I finally decided to get my first laptop. I did a large amount of looking around and finally decided on a laptop in the HP HDX series. I wanted a big screen and since I didn't (and don't) plan on carrying it around a lot, I wasn't too concerned about its size. Portability and weight weren't major considerations. If they are for you, then definitely don't get this. It is something of a monster, quite heavy. Furthermore, as far as I've been able to discover, there is only one case that will accommodate a laptop this side, one by Targus. It is less like a messenger bag or pack back and more like a suitcase on wheels. But except for the size, this is a great laptop and I'm completely delighted with it.

There is really only one advantage to buying a preconfigured laptop. You can get it quickly. But I would recommend people who really know what they want to do their own configuration. I wanted a computer that was really strong on media, so I opted for the 1 GB video card, a Blu-ray burner, and a TV tuner. I also got the bluetooth wife modem so that I wouldn't have to use a transceiver. The computer has been exceptional in this regard. The screen is bright and unbelievably detailed. Blu-ray discs don't look quite as good as they do on my Samsung high def TV using a PS3, but it is close. The built in speakers are amazingly decent for a laptop. Although I prefer using headphones for movies and videos, the speakers are good enough for two people to watch something together. But for music while I type I usually just use the built in speakers.

Just about everything else about the computer is great as well. I find the keyboard comfortable to use and the action on the keys are really nice. I don't like the touchpad, but that would be true for absolutely any laptop.

If you are looking for a laptop that is superb at multimedia but that doesn't have to be especially transportable, you can't do much better than this laptop. My one piece of advice for anyone configuring a laptop is to put your upfront money almost entirely in things that cannot be upgraded easily later. Put off the printer if it means you can get a faster processor. Don't worry about the size of your hard drive, because there great inexpensive external hard drives (you can get a 1 TB today for less than $150). But also plan on doing other things to extend the life of your computer. I got the Blu-ray burner, but I plan on getting an external DVD drive to minimize the wear and tear on the internal drive. I got a single battery now, but plan on getting a second one later. But it is pretty difficult to upgrade your processor speed or video card later. Of course, if money isn't a consideration for you (it was for me), go ahead and get everything right now. But whether you have to economize or not, this is a great multimedia computer.

Have purchased four HP laptops over last 3 years; construction quality (esp. drive wiring) on this laptop clearly inferior to older 9000 and 6700 models.

Technical support is highly variable, hence very frustrating. They have excessive training in "manners" and inadequate training in their work. They must fill out form info on the caller for half an hour. Their computer support (they search your problem as they talk) is weak (their response times are slow) and requires them to access multiple "data bases" on multiple computers.

In fairness, I suppose, after many years and many laptops, I stopped buying Dell because they were worse.... Unfortunately, I am afraid that HP is the "next Dell."

I am writing about the HDX- 18.4". I bought one new in Jan (elsewhere) and am buying a 2nd for my wife from Amazon Warehouse (will update review on that when I get May 28 09).

Processor- The Intel Quad9000 (their entry level Quad) is a 5 out of 5 star (Intel's rating system)and currently the BEST quad you can get in a laptop. There are EXTREME chips that may be better for gaming. This chip alone costs $1,200 to add when you customize most systems. This is the BEST thing about this system. You will be up to date for at least another year and a half.

Screen- This screen is "true" 1080 HD resolution -the specs on this page are wrong. I told a Amazon tech on the phone, but they didn't seem to care. 18.4" with true WIDESCREEN 16x9 (normally it's 16x10). You can't find true 1080 on some machines that cost $1k more.

Hard Drive/RAM - 500GB is more than you could possibly need. 4GB is nice, but you may want to add another 2 GB.

Graphics Card- The NVIDIA 9600 is really not going to get it done except on low settings for the most demanding games like Crysis. You can try it on low settings, but then your really not getting all the game. This is the worst thing about the machine. If your not going to be playing the most demanding games then there is no worry.

Extras- BluRay- Nice to have although I have BluRay players. Fingerprint thing you will use more than you think. The lightscribe is cool, but you need discs that cost twice as much if you want to use that.

I researched EVERY option out there and if your looking for a 17"+ desktop replacement type this is THE BEST you can do at any price unless you customize -which is VERY costly.

Acceptable. That's the word that comes to mind with my new HP HDX16. I would not call it spectacular or awesome. I just cannot win. Came on time. Easy to set-up (much easier than I had anticipated). Is performing very well. The only problem I've had so far is I can't get the fingerprint reader to recognize my prints (which is frustrating, but not the end of the world). My old laptop met with a sudden and unfortunate demise, so I needed a replacement quickly. After looking through everything Amazon had to offer, I finally settled on the HP Pavilion HDX18 and I must say I am very pleased! It is an aesthically appealing machine, although I find (because of its glossy features) I must "polish" it weekly. A slip jacket is included with this laptop and helps keep the casing scratch-free. That may not be a big deal to some purchasers, but I found it to be a nice little extra. I am also very pleased with the performance of this machine. The finger-print reader is wonderful! The huge 18.4" high-definition widescreen will impress those of you who can't bear squinting at tiny monitors...and just wait 'till you hear the sound! OMG!!! This laptop offers the best sound I have ever head on any computer. The backwards compatibility to "a" and "g" Wi-Fi (this computer has wi802.11n Wi-Fi) is another plus...there's no hurry to upgrade your wireless router. Connectivity was painless. The preinstalled software is also nice (Microsoft Works and a trial version of Microsoft Office) for those who don't wish to invest in expensive software right off the the bat, although I uninstalled these programs since I use MS Office 2007 Professional. For many home users, though, MS Works is perfectly adequate. The 500GB hard drive holds tons of software and I've found that in spite of loading many graphics software programs I still have lots of hard drive space left. A word of caution to those of you who have not updated your software...there may be compatibility issues with Vista and/or the 64 bit processor. I was running Adobe Illustrator 9.0 on my old XP machine...but its a "no go" on this one. Although it installed OK, when I tried to launch it I got an incompatibility message and it corrupted my Photoshop CS color profiles which required reinstallation of Photoshop. Also, Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Premiere Elements 4.0 are not compatible...so I did incur some additional expense upgrading my software. Oddly, some older games (the Myst series) run just fine, although some people have reported difficulties. I did incur a little glitch the first day I used this computer, but got through to HDX technical support immediately and the problem was resolved in moments. This special HDX technical support phone number appears on a removeable label on the lower-left corner (below the keyboard)...so make a note of it...it will save you lots of waiting time. The weight of this machine is listed as a "con" in some reviews, however I do not find this to be a problem. Finding a case is more of a challenge. I purchased the Miltigiant 20 Largest Multi Design Nb Case. It is very large (almost like a small suitcase), but now that I've used it, I like it. It holds lots of extras...headphones, external hard-drive, etc. with room to spare. I only have two negative things to say about this computer (although they would not have prevented my purchase): first, is its lack of a latch to keep the laptop closed and second, one additional USB port would have been nice (my old HP had more USB ports than this one does) and in a world with so many USB peripherals, lots of ports are essential. An inexpensive USB hub took care of this problem. All-in-all, though, this is a great computer...lots of computer at a great value. Problems to install adobe programs are real, it does happen! Glossy screen truly sucks, all you can see is your reflexs as a mirror! The whole thing seems to be pretty cheap, feels very plastic and key buttons are not even nice! i had it for one day and inmediately sold it for a hundred dollars less, still i think that's better! I had an IBM Thinkpad for several years and moved up to this HP. It is fast, nice and has everything you could want but the shiny highly reflective screen is not a good thing.

You have a terrible time seeing anything if you are outside using this HP. If you are inside and near windows or lots of lighting the screen is often difficult to view.

This is a great laptop, but unfortunately Vista is a real bad Operating System. I have several conflicts trying to run my old software in Vista, so you must upgrade all your programs to work or try to work in Vista.
I bought this laptop to replace a desktop. It is a power laptop, but it is also heavy and consume energy so your battery will last for less than 2 hours, but it works fine for me because I was replacing a desktop.
Again, it is a Good laptop, but WAIT for a new Operating system that will be released in October or November this year. If you buy your laptop now, no one will support your migration to the new operating system.

I purchased the HDX 1140-US for my son. This machine is beautifully constructed, and functions incredibly well. I don't think you can find this much bang for the buck, including dedicated video memory, in another unit in this price range. I think HP hardware has really improved over the years - not so thrilled with their peripheral drivers, though.

My only complaint - probably not really HP's fault, but they are contributing to the propagation - is the inclusion of Vista. There are much more competent OSes available, but as long as Microsoft has the vendors in their pocket, I guess we will be stuck with it. Although Ubuntu and others are available, some drivers can be difficult to find.

Please convince me that there is a functional reason why Vista cannot be backwards compatible? Why should we have to keep the old laptop around to run XP-compatible software?

My wife and I purchased this laptop for her mother and I have been very impressed with the features and build quality. It is well constructed with a metallic toned black plastic exterior. Take a good look at the shell art since it is something that may not appeal to everyone but my mother-in-law definitely appreciated having something a little more individual than the usual dull grey exterior. Despite the glossy exterior we haven't noticed much in the way of finger prints or any scratches despite the helping hands of our kids who love to "help" grandma with her computer.

The specs for this model are set well above what the average home owner needs today which (in my mind) future proofs it nicely. If you are on a tight budget you can get what you need for less (look at the HP Pavilion G60 line). If you have a little bit more to spend and you want some headroom to handle your computing needs for the next few years this is a great choice.

CPU - The dual core Turion is a solid notebook processor. It can handle two threads which means you can have the virus scanner running while you surf the web with no noticeable slowdown. No it's not the most aggressive notebook CPU out there but it's a solid mid-tier processor that runs cool and has a great power envelope. Outside of gaming CPUs are not the performance bottleneck in notebooks so most users should aim for a mid-tier CPU and spend their budget on things that will get them more tangible enjoyment (like a nice display and good graphics).

RAM - The 64 bit Windows can utilize more RAM than the old 32 Windows so why not through a lot of memory at it? It's cheap and a better path to improved performance for the average notebook user than more CPU horsepower. 6 GB of RAM might seem like overkill but this is one area where too much now = enough later.

HDD - 500GB plenty is far more space than you need now but again, I like the future proofing. Some people may not like that it is 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM but the performance difference is nearly zero thanks to the 6GB of RAM and the reliability of 5400 RPM drives makes me prefer them in notebooks which are hard on hard disks (because they move around while in use notebook HDDs suffer far more failures than desktop drives)

Graphics - The integrated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 is vastly superior to the usual low-end graphics that plague notebooks. You can actually do a little gaming on this notebook which is a truly rare thing.

Display - HP has a reputation for high-end displays and this one delivers. Tuned slightly for indoor use the HP Brightview display is good enough for outdoor use though not as much as a more matte display. Indoors it is brilliant with surprisingly strong blacks (too many notebook displays are all brightness with no depth). I like that the 16" wide screen provides a decent amount of vertical space without overdoing it. The difference between this and a 14"-15" is surprising.

Sound - Surprisingly good sound for a notebook. The speakers are well positioned and deliver a good range. I've heard better but it was on a $3K notebook.

Battery - For years the retail notebook market has been plagued with cheap six cell and even four cell batteries that could barely deliver 90 minutes of real computing use. To see HP bundle a 12 cell Li-Ion battery in with this notebook is hopefully a sign the industry is recognizing the note users want good battery life. With a 12 cell battery you can realistically plan to go all day without plugging in. This does add slightly to the weight but few users will notice.

I don't have any serious "cons" for this computer. The "Touch Media Controls" for things like the volume (as opposed to buttons you push) are a little odd at first but we got used to them quickly and hey, they look cool when they light up.

To wrap it all up: you can always buy more features for more money but if you are looking for a laptop with some higher-end features and upscale build quality this is an excellent choice. HP spent money in the right places and has created a high-end laptop at a mid-tier price.

The specs for this model are aimed at someone focused on web browsing and office type applications who wants superb battery life:

CPU - The Core 2 duo is the best performing notebook CPU on the market and the T6500 included with this computer is a mid-range Core2 Duo (2.1 GHZ w/2MB cache). It can handle two threads which means you can have the virus scanner running while you surf the web with no noticeable slowdown. It's not the highest performing CPU out there today but it's far above what you need for non-gaming tasks and it has a enough performance head-room to keep your computer from becoming outdated anytime soon.

CPU - The T6500 is great for General usage. It's okay for gaming and HD playback too.

RAM - 4GB makes multitasking a breeze

Hard Drive - The main partition is 285GB with a 12.5GB recovery partition. 285GBs is a nice size to work with too it'll take long, long time to fill that up.

Graphics - The 4500MHD is okay for light gaming like Counter-Strike. It also does HD playback fine.

Sound - This laptop has great speakers. They don't get too loud but that's fine. The quality of the sound is great.

Battery - Will last a good long while and is better than most laptops. Most laptops have 6 cell batteries, this one has a 12 cell. Also the battery sticks out from the bottom. Some people may not like it but it is also a good thing because heat won't get stuck under the laptop.

Heat - This laptop will get warm from extended use. It gets slightly uncomfortable to type on because of it. It's not really that bad though.

Keyboard - This laptop is easy to type on. I can type really fast on it. It is a full keyboard with a numpad so most of your keys are there.
The Home, End, Pgup, PGdown, keys are above the trackpad and delete is above the backspace.

Trackpad - The trackpad may seem a little hard to move on at first but after a while it becomes smooth. You can also turn it on and off with a button conveniently placed above it if you want to use a mouse. It also has a scroll bar.

Other Thoughts - This laptop has 2 head phone hacks. Both are in the front. I'd prefer one in the front then one in the side or back for speakers.

HP Logo on the cover lights up when the laptop is on. This annoys me when I leave my laptop on overnight and I have to put something over the light to cover it because it's kinda bright.

The remote it comes with is kind of small and it can be difficult to push the buttons but it still is a nice addition so I don't have to get up and pause, skip, etc. on the keyboard.

NOTE: This laptop only has the touch volume controls and a touch wifi button. There is no Play, Pause, Stop, etc. touch buttons on this model. That was kind of a disappointment because I have to press Fn+F12 if I want to change songs.
